THNA will be hosting its first annual Walk of Art on Saturday, October 22, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature neighborhood artists, craftspeople, and musicians, who will show and sell their work in their homes and studios, offering Terrell Heights residents and visitors an exciting opportunity to meet the artists and purchase original works. Residents can further show their support by hosting an artist, craftsperson, or musician in their own front yard or home.

Artists, craftspeople, and musicians who wish to participate can download the application: Application for Walk of Art

It’s generally understood and accepted that a community thrives when people support local businesses and schools. Supporting the arts is every bit as beneficial to a community’s quality of life, if not more so.

Some of you may be thinking, “Who can afford to support the arts in today’s struggling economy?” After all, art is not practical and is generally the last item on someone’s list of discretionary spending even when times are good. But the benefits of supporting the arts–especially in tough times like these–become even more valuable in ways that go far beyond one’s personal finances.

Original art nourishes our souls and lifts us into a world of possibilities. And who among us could not use some of that right now? Products of mass production and visual manipulation surround us, brainwashing us into conforming and consuming without question. To display unique visions of the world urges us to remember our aliveness and our deeper humanity, expresses our personal tastes, and reminds us of the quirky, unpredictable, exploratory, and magically inventive qualities of the human imagination.

For more information about the Walk of Art, call Betsy Gruy at (210) 315-4966, or email her at betsy@sugarloosedesigns.com.

Mary Louise Hill, beloved wife, mother, nurse, and friend to all, died peacefully in her sleep on June 17th at her home . She was 69 years old.

You may remember Mary as the silver-haired lady with the great smile who took your checks and cash when you renewed your THNA membership, or bought a neighborhood T-shirt, or paid for your yard sale registration. Mary was our Treasurer, beloved neighbor, and longstanding active member of the Terrell Heights Neighborhood Association. Whatever event or task that needed attention, Mary and her husband, Paul, were always there to lend a hand. She loved attending the picnics and socials and watching the children play. My kids remember Mary for the cool contraption that she showed them how to use to pick up pecans in her yard. And when we visited her, there was always a piece of candy or baked cookie for them. I will remember Mary for her wonderful sense of humor, her love of learning, our conversations in Spanish, and the bags of pecans she and the kids collected.

Mary had a wonderfully rich life, filled with world travel as a Pan Am flight attendent and then as a nurse in San Antonio caring for newborns at Methodist Hospital. She was an associate member of the Brigidine Sisters and served as a volunteer for several charitable organizations, including Vitas and the Children’s Bereavement Center. Mary and Paul participated in many cultural events in San Antonio and lived a life of community service. Mary was without a doubt a vibrant, warm-hearted woman with a loving spirit and a desire to live life to its fullest. We will miss her terribly.

Janice Aull, Beverly Monestier, Judy Temple, and other neighbors met today with KSAT- 12 reporter Shari St. Clare to talk about the two natural springs behind Janice’s house and the need to protect them from the multifamily apartment complex that Colglazier Properties plans to develop on the land. It was a good meeting and a lot was heard regarding preserving the springs and working toward responsible development. The KSAT team filmed the sight of the flowing water and interviewed Janice Aull and Judy Temple. We’ll let you know when KSAT-12 will air the report and hopefully someone can record it.

More news, Colglazier Properties has listed the property for sale for $1,900.000 with the MF25 multifamily zoning designation. See the attached PDF of their brochure. Or you can get the information from their website www.colglazier.com and go to the land inventory link. The listing is #11 on their land properties list. Interesting to see how quickly the brochure and information with the MF25 designation were put together. Anyway, we now have an asking price. Do any of you have that amount under your mattress? Where do we go from here? Any potential buyers for portions of the land – the Southwest Preparatory School, the City Parks and Recreation Dept, or a developer with creative vision and a willingness to do responsible architecture?
