Advocacy
Chair: Mark Deeds
Focus
The Advocacy committee represents the association’s interest in zoning, planning and development issues with potential impact to the character, property value, safety and quality of life in the neighborhood.
Activities
We communicate with elected officials and city committees and staff.
Goal
Remain aware of development activity, capital projects and other programs proposed in the vicinity of the neighborhood and share this information with the general membership.
Beautification
Chair: Vacant
Focus
Volunteers help to beautify and enhance the neighborhood, especially the public spaces of the traffic islands and Scates Park.
Activities
Organize and coordinate landscaping, gardening, tree planting and other neighborhood beautification projects.
Green Living
Chair – Kathy Reynolds
Focus
To provide education and activities designed to foster caring for our environment.
Activities
Sponsors compost bins for residents. Introduces recycling ideas to all.
History
Chair: Vacant
Focus
Gather and safeguard memories, photographs, and other documentation of the past 60+ years of our neighborhood’s existence, as well as the association that serves it.
Activities
Organize, catalog and curate existing artifacts. Gather and record new artifacts and share with the Association and the community. Organize oral history projects as service opportunity for neighborhood students.
Membership & Volunteer Recruitment

Focus
Building membership in the THNA and organizing people to support events and projects.
Activities
Block Captains and Alley Captains are vital members of this committee. Block Captains help distribute the newsletter, petitions, or flyers to the residents of their block, as well communicate concerns to the THNA board. Alley Captains help our neighborhood retain its alley garbage pick up service. These volunteers work in teams of two per block to monitor the conditions of the alleys. If you like keeping weeds and brush under control, communicating with the neighbors on your block, or merely providing support at Neighborhood Association functions, this is the committee for you.
Goal
Represent your block within the association and coordinate block participation in association activities.
Newsletter
Chair – Vacant
Focus
The Newsletter committee is responsible for the production of the neighborhood newsletter.
Activities
Gather and edit submissions, report on neighborhood happenings, take photos.
Social Events
Co-Chairs – Ann Deeds & Karen Williams
Focus
Plan and coordinate all social events for the year, such as the neighborhood yard sale, block party, National Neighborhood Night Out, and the holiday toy drive
Activities
Plan events, evaluate and develop ideas for new social events.
Technology
Chair – Leslie Provence
Focus
Maintain the association’s information technology infrastructure, including database, email, and website.
Activities
Administer the membership database, manage the website, send out neighborhood emails, and provide assistance for other communications.
Needed Skills
Computer skills ranging from website design and graphics to database administration are desirable, but not completely necessary.
Traffic & Safety
Co-Chairs – John Callahan & Jeff Cox
Focus
Work closely with the advocacy committee to implement ideas to keep our streets safe for our residents.
Activities
The committee is working to shape the impact of the upcoming developments that will have an effect on the traffic flow through our neighborhood by exploring the use of traffic calming devices.



Demolition of Terrell Plaza is to go as scheduled, asbestos removal is going on now.
Met with city managers office staffers and discussed the rest of the project, infrastructure and the like, at that point I met Jack Judson of Austin Highway Revitalization Project Inc, listed as an inactive corporation, he was not happy when I pointed this out, refused to deal with him further as did city staffers. Met again with Target Stores Inc, nothing has changed.
The final revision plans from 11/10 are valid working plans.
As you are aware, this will be done in phases and in order to allow some level of continuity some shops have been relocated to the Seidel St strip center with Big Lots and Earl Abel’s being the very last to be “remodeled” as phase 3 or 4, depending on viewpoint.
The only thing not clear is Sherwin Williams paint.
